I hope you enjoy this week’s reflection on the following scripture:

“But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.’” Luke 10.41-42 (ESV)

The way we live our mortal lives can lead us to joyous eternity. Too often, my eyes are set on things of this world. Especially during this season of preparation for Christmas.

I consider if my decorations please my family and visitors. I hope my loved ones like their gifts, which will be beautifully wrapped. I have many baked goods I like to make and give away. There are traditional occasions I like to attend.

It is because I love this season that I prepare in these worldly ways. However, each Advent season, I am growing closer to becoming more like Mary in today’s selected biblical story. This is despite my Martha tendencies.

From today’s scripture we learn that Martha was frantically preparing and fussing over the comfort of Jesus, her esteemed guest. Her eyes were focused on worldly things rather than her spiritual journey.

She overlooked that her job was to simply listen to His message and absorb its wisdom as Mary did. Martha had expressed her frustration to Jesus that Mary was not doing the work. He sided with the one who sat at His feet saying, “she has chosen the good portion.”

It is counterculture to patiently wait on Jesus to lead us. Yet, we can learn to follow Jesus, keeping our focus on a path to eternity. To trust Him in all things leading us past temptations toward gratitude for our very lives, where we are loved and granted mercy.

Each day is filled with opportunities for my Martha to emerge to focus solely on the rewards of this world that I forget the reward we have in Heaven. Focusing on the teachings of Jesus is the best use of time.

Once we learn to follow Jesus, we are led to focusing our hearts and actions on pleasing the Lord. This is a path that takes courage as we work to let go of our own controls.

When we give our worried hearts a rest, we can learn to exist in harmony with all of God’s creation. We can simply show up in the world as we are perfectly formed in His image.

As we make our walk in faith, we can shed our worries in the light, illuminating a path toward Eternal Love.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for providing endless lessons for my life. This advent season, let me have hope that I can find time to truly listen to the call of Jesus and resist the temptations to stray from my purpose. Amen.
