Divine Time #46: Shade Trees

Making time for a Future Reward
3

My newsletter exists to spread the idea of a loving spirit to readers each Tuesday morning.

Each week, I find inspiration from secular and/or sacred texts and weave a personal essay aimed at revealing a loving spirit at work in the universe. Each post concludes with a prayer and self-enrichment journal prompts.

Reflection:

“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” Nelson Henderson

Time. It continues. Each day’s activities lingering into the next; our actions rippling into an unknown future. The seeds we plant today will germinate and grow.

The tapestry of creation is the culmination of all these efforts. This is true in botany as well as in the work we do. Our efforts can be intentional to the benefit of a future fellow traveler of this earth.

One can plant a tree, because she is confident there will be shade, which is good. We want there to be goodness in this world. By planting a tree you believe you are part of the magic of hope to the betterment of someone other than yourself.

Taking beneficial actions expecting little to nothing in return is a worthwhile endeavor solely for its own value. One gains a sense of satisfaction and purpose that is sustaining. This leads to a true path towards everlasting life knowing your efforts on earth outlast you.

Those who practice spirituality learn that creation is good and so are we. Practices, such as planting trees, help us find connection with the spiritual aspects of life. Faith in something greater than yourself buoys you to take these actions because you are confident of your ultimate purpose is to sustain life itself.

Each moment we spend trickles into the universe. Intentionally living with hope for a future that outlasts you has its own reward.

Prayer: Oh Holy One, thank You for the love I feel when I am comforted in an abundant canopy of shade trees. Inspire my efforts to ease the suffering of another on a future day, allow my work to be in service to goodness in this world. Amen.

Journal prompts:

  • Think about“the seeds you plant” in your daily life. What actions are you taking to create positive change, and how might these actions influence your life in the present and the life of others in the future?

  • If you were to plant a tree as a symbol of hope and positivity, what would your tree be made of, and how would it impact those who may find shade under its branches in the future?
